I was invited to experience a Hotpod Yoga class. Housed in an inflatable pod that can accommodate up to 20 people and is heated to 37 degrees, Hotpod yoga offers a fresh approach to yoga in a unique, otherworldy setting.
was really looking forward to my Hotpod Yoga class, although I was a little apprehensive as I have very little experience in actual yoga practice.
On arrival I met Alex Hurley, the owner of Hodpod Yoga Newcastle. I asked him how this exciting venture came about. He explained that he had previously been employed as a contractor for the MoD, working as a physiotherapist. The change in direction was influenced by the arrival of his two children, Oscar and Olivia. Being a weekend dad, travelling around the country and constantly being away from home had become too much.
Alex also stated that he had always been interested in exercise, but realised that just focusing on building muscle bulk and strength was not sustainable in the long term and began to look for an alternative.
He first become aware of Hotpod Yoga when his wife, Jules, attended an open day. So a huge thank you goes out to her for planting the seed.
Hotpod Yoga is based, stylistically, on vinyasa yoga - also known as flow. It is one of the most popular types of yoga because of its continual movement approach.
The Hotpod immersive experience focuses on continual movement synchronised with the breath, and is cleverly designed to stimulate both mind and body.
Who are these classes aimed at? Hotpod Yoga is suitable for every body and every mind: ladies, gentlemen, beginners, seasoned professionals, young and old! All you need to take part is a bottle of water and a towel.
Hotpod Newcastle is the first of its kind in the whole of the North of England and I felt honoured to be invited along to try the ‘Hotpod Flow’ class, which lasts for an hour and is designed for beginners and intermediates.
The pod itself is amazing, it can fit a class of 20 people inside and is heated at a constant temperature of 37 degrees. In appearance it does look like something from another planet. Its dark interior is intimate and calming and provides the perfect setting for a hot yoga class.
As soon as I entered the pod I began to feel calm and relaxed. The ambient music soothed my mind as I laid on my back and enjoyed the cocoon-like environment; I felt the stresses and strains of everyday life just slipping away.
The session began with some gentle stretching, using familiar yoga poses, moving into more difficult poses and balance work. Each movement cleverly flowed into the next, making the routine fluid and easy to follow.
Alex clearly explained every body position and gave exercise modifications to make the exercises suitable for the differing abilities within the class.
The class finished with a nice personal touch from Alex, who gently massaged my head and neck. In the warmth of the pod I could have quite easily drifted off to sleep.
After the class I felt invigorated, my mind was calm, my muscles were tired, my body felt more flexible and yes, I was a whole lot sweatier.
You can also take part in the ‘Nurturing Flow’ class, which is slower and less physical in style, or the ‘Dynamic Flow’ class - faster in style and designed for intermediate and advanced yoga practitioners.
All I can say is that this was one of the best exercise experiences I have had in a long time. So much so, I am already booked in for the Nurturing Flow class.
