Roald Dahl’s Matilda -A revoltingly good show at The Empire, Sunderland

May 14, 2018

The show opened with the song “My mum thinks I’m a miracle” and what parent doesn’t think their child is a special? It’s ironic that this award-winning show has been adapted from Roald Dahl’s story of a miracle child, Matilda, born into a family who prefer to watch TV rather than pick up a book.

Matilda is an introvert - a difficult trait to nail for a child actor. The night I saw the show Matilda was played by Annalise Bradbury and she did the role justice with her confident approach.

Craige Els was magnificent as the terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull. The larger than life child hater was deliciously revolting.

The grotesque characters of Mr & Mrs Wornwood played by Sebastian Torkia and Rebecca Thornhill were superb.

Miss Honey was played sensitively by Carly Thomas and the supporting cast did an excellent job.

The show captures the original delicious, nastiness of Dahl’s original book and composer and lyricist Tim Minchin goes to the top of the class with this anarchic and ingenious musical score. A must see.
